The Center Cumbernauld

The Center Cumbernauld 1 - upper level corridor near library entrance

Silence. Empty space. Almost abandoned. A brutalist monolith, floating over the town, a relic of bold designs and planning. Empty but for a few.

This is a building soon to be demolished, which at it’s peak was designed to fulfil the needs of 50 000 to 80 000 people in the local community. Now mostly empty, it is filled with closed and shuttered shop fronts, interspersed with the occasional business that continues to trudge on, despite the almost non-existent footfall.

It is a place for many people to gather, and a place for many people to become lost. Even those who grew up here find ways to lose themselves in the depths of this building, whether figuratively or literally. To me it is a surprisingly peaceful space, yet many find the emptiness and silence unsettling.
